Swapping the traditional collegiate colours for something a little more subdued is a quick way to update Ivy League dressing in a way that looks modern, and not out of place off campus. Some useful advice for preppy dressing whether in pastels or not is to stick to one or two key pieces at a time, mixing them with contemporary staples. Wear varsity jackets with denim and sneakers, and pair chinos with a hoodie and an Oxford shirt.

Sneakers are generally worn as part of a more casual outfit, making them an easy way to introduce a pop of colour. Opt for minimalist tennis shoes or retro classics, which are a more refined choice than bulky running or basketball sneakers, which can look a little childish in pastels.

At the opposite end of the colour spectrum to neutrals, pastel shades are inherently casual. However, when it comes to shirts, this changes based on the overall cut. Stick to soft shades like sky blue and pink for anything being combined with a tie, reserving more vibrant tones for casual Oxford or Cuban collar shirts.

If your starting point is all-black everything, then head-to-toe-pastels might be a tall hill to climb. There was a time when chinos were synonymous with shades of khaki and stone, but today they span the entire rainbow. While anything is, in theory, possible, these generally look best cut slim in slightly washed out shades of pink, blue and green. Sweatshirts : the Swiss-army knife of menswear, and possibly the only garment that can be worn to the gym, the office and the pub though preferably, not in succession.

Although it can be quite sugary to combine baby blue with pink or mint green there are very beautiful ways to combine these pastels. I love the 2 renditions below, where 2 shades of pastel blue are combined with green.

The color combination at the right is just stunning. Also very chic is just to focus on one color. You can wear the same color all-over or put a brighter version of the pastel on top as shown at the right. Ana combines her peach dress with black creating a very stylish look, while Greetje wears it casually with jeans.

The shimmer of her top brightens up the look as well as her colorful necklace. My personal favorite is that combination on the right. Sabine website Polyvore likes to wear them for a sunny day at the beach! Nanne website Polyvore has combined pastels with her beloved neutrals.

Suzanne opts for brighter pastels and combines them with even brighter or darker colors. The good thing is that pastels continue to be popular for winter as well. So if you invest in pieces that you can easily layer, you can use them for the whole of the coming year!

One of my own tricks for not getting washed out by pastels is to wear it with a brighter color. I love wearing this silk and linen baby blue top from In Good Company with my trusted red skirt.
