Murphy, the only Penn State alumnus to receive the Medal of Honor, a distinction given posthumously for his courageous actions in during the war in Afghanistan. An architectural icon for Penn Staters around the world, Old Main provides offices for the University president, provost, and many other senior administrators. The building is open to the public during business hours. Erected in and part of campus legend for generations of students, the Obelisk demonstrates how long-term exposure to weather affects a wide variety of building stones found throughout Pennsylvania.
A close inspection of the Obelisk reveals distinct differences in how well some of the stones have withstood the elements. The slate, for example, shows evidence of disintegration. It is the oldest building on campus. The remaining portion of the alumni center was opened in The alumni center welcomes the public during business hours and on most weekends. Officially known as the Recreation Building, Rec Hall is the popular name for this historic facility.
Enlarged and renovated several times, Rec Hall continues to be a popular venue for many intercollegiate sporting events, such as wrestling and gymnastics, as well as for intramural athletics and physical education classes, and still hosts visits to campus by major public figures.
Older alumni remember it as the place where they registered for classes at the start of each semester. Carved from a ton block of Indiana limestone by renowned sculptor Heinz Warneke, the Nittany Lion Shrine is the most photographed site on campus. It was completed in as a gift to Penn State from the class of The shrine was located here because of its proximity to the Nittany Lion Inn and so many athletic venues.
Rec Hall, across the street, hosted basketball, wrestling, and other sporting events. The 50,volume-capacity building had the beginnings of some special collections, including government documents and the Penn State Room. Departmental libraries in a number of the sciences also had been established by this time, and some continue today as our branch libraries.
The collection eventually outgrew the building, which by contained three times as many volumes as the number for which the building was designed. A new main building, now Pattee Library, was constructed as part of a multibuilding Public Works Administration-General State Authority project in the period.
As Pattee Library grew, three major additions were made, the most recent being the East Wing in Although the holdings of the University Libraries had grown to some , volumes by the mids, it was recognized by the University that this was insufficient to support a major research-oriented university, and budgetary support for the University Libraries increased rapidly. The former East Pattee, now part of Paterno Library, has been renovated to provide office and work spaces, as well as homes for five subject libraries.
The Paterno Library ground floor initially housed the Maps Library, special collections storage, and Digital Library Technologies offices and now houses the Department of Information Technology and special collections storage. An investigator from the Rockview Barracks is in charge of the case.
